A fully-monitored emergency ICU service, and a 24 hour endoscopic and surgical service ensure immediate control of massive bleeding. Complex diagnostic and therapeutic modalities often avoid the need for high-risk surgery. The availability of all the investigational modalities within the hospital makes LIGG one of the best centres for evaluation of gastrointestinal bleeds. The unit has risen to be a tertiary referral centre in the state of orissa for this pathology. Patients presenting with GI bleeds are resuscitated in the intensive care setting if needed. The investigation required for each patient is decided after consultation between the surgeon, interventional radiologist and the medical gastroenterologist. The availability under a single roof of al advanced imaging techniques like Upper GI Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, On-table Enteroscopy, and Angiography ensures that a patient will not need to be shifted out of the hospital for any evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gastroenterology is the medical specialty focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Hepatology specifically deals with diseases of the liver, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.

You should consider seeing a gastroenterologist if you experience symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, jaundice, or unexplained weight loss. Additionally, if you have a family history of gastrointestinal diseases or need screening for conditions like colon cancer, it’s advisable to consult a gastroenterologist.

Preparation instructions for procedures like endoscopy and colonoscopy typically involve dietary restrictions, bowel preparation to cleanse the colon, and medication adjustments. Your gastroenterologist will provide specific guidelines tailored to your individual needs and the type of procedure you’ll undergo.

Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat a wide range of digestive disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), gastrointestinal bleeding, liver diseases (such as fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis), gallbladder disorders, pancreatic diseases, and gastrointestinal cancers.

During your visit, your gastroenterologist will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and discuss your symptoms and concerns. Depending on your condition, further diagnostic tests or procedures may be recommended. Your gastroenterologist will explain the findings, discuss treatment options, and develop a personalized care plan tailored to your needs.

Maintaining good digestive health involves adopting a balanced diet rich in fiber, staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, managing stress, exercising regularly, and getting regular check-ups with your healthcare provider. Additionally, following recommended screening guidelines for conditions like colorectal cancer can help detect potential issues early when treatment is most effective.
