Frequently Asked Questions

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer refers to cancers that originate in the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, colon, and rectum.

Common types of GI cancers include colorectal cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, and esophageal cancer.

Risk factors for GI cancer include age, family history of cancer, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, obesity, diet high in processed meats and low in fruits and vegetables, and certain medical conditions like chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.

Symptoms of GI cancer vary depending on the type and location but may include persistent abdominal pain, bloating, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, blood in stool, and changes in bowel habits.

Diagnosing GI cancer often involves a combination of physical exams, imaging tests (such as CT scans or MRIs), endoscopy, biopsy, and blood tests.

Treatment options for GI cancer depend on the type, stage, and location of the cancer but may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.

While not all cases of GI cancer can be prevented, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk, such as maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, not smoking, and getting regular screenings.

The prognosis for GI cancer depends on various factors, including the type and stage of cancer, as well as the individual’s overall health. Early detection and treatment can improve outcomes.
